FROM LEGENDARY SPORTS CARS TO INNOVATIVE SPORT-UTES: CHEVROLET ADDS FOUR NEW MODELS FOR 2005

Chevrolet introduces four more new models to its expansive line of cars and trucks in the 2005 model year, including the highly anticipated next-generation Corvette.

Joining Corvette for 2005 are three all-new nameplates, as GM’s highest volume brand implements one of the most aggressive new model launch cycles in its 93-year history. During a 20-month period ending in mid-2005, Chevrolet will put 10 new car or truck models into production.

On the car side, Chevrolet is rewriting the rules of the small car market with Cobalt, a new line of coupes and sedans.

New to Chevy’s light truck line is the Uplander, which revolutionizes the van market by combining the best features of these family haulers with the bold styling of an SUV and the operating efficiency, responsiveness and quiet ride of a sedan.

Within the sport-utility segment – the all-new Equinox brings a higher level of innovation and versatility to the compact SUV market, along with class-leading standard power and one of the longest wheelbases in the segment.

Chevrolet’s latest product barrage began in late 2003, with the production start of the all-new Malibu Maxx extended sedan. Since then, the bow-tie brand also has brought to market the all-new Colorado midsize pickup, Aveo entry-level car, and the SSR roadster pickup, which now packs Corvette muscle under its innovative exterior. Chevrolet will complete its current new product cycle by mid-2005, with the market introduction of the next-generation Impala and a unique crossover vehicle called HHR.

New car model highlights for 2005:

Corvette:  As the sixth generation of this legendary sports car, the Corvette coupe and convertible are completely new from the ground up, with more power, better handling and reduced weight. More competition-influenced than any previous model, Corvette has an all-new 6.0L V-8 that pumps out 400 horsepower (298 kw) and 400 lb.-ft. (542 Nm) of torque. With a top speed of almost 186 mph (300 km/h) and 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of about 4.2 seconds, this is the fastest and most powerful small-block Corvette ever.

Corvette’s dramatic new body – featuring the first exposed headlamps since 1962 – is 5 inches shorter (13 cm) than the previous-generation model, for reduced overall weight and mass. With a coefficient of drag (cd) rating of just 0.28, it is the most aerodynamic version yet. Along with larger wheels and tires, as well as more powerful brakes and a range of sophisticated chassis control systems, the 2005 Corvette is the most agile and best handling of its namesake in its illustrious 52-year history.

Cobalt: As Chevy’s newest entry in the small car segment, Cobalt has a premium look and feel throughout. Offered in coupe or sedan body styles, Cobalt comes in six trim levels. Each has a specific interior, powertrain, suspension and wheel/tire combination to deliver distinct levels of performance and handling.

The coupe, sedan and LS models, as well as the LT sedan, have as standard GM’s proven 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder engine, rated at 140 horsepower (104 kw). The Cobalt SS Supercharged coupe has the 2.0L Ecotec four-cylinder engine, rated at 205 horsepower.

Following are highlights of other cars in Chevrolet’s 2005 lineup.

Aveo: Aveo is a surprisingly spacious, refined entry-level car with many extras that make it a standout in this segment. The Aveo line includes a four-door sedan and stylish five-door hatchback. With one of the largest interiors in its class, both models seat five adults in comfort.

Standard features include tilt-adjustable steering column, AM/FM stereo, six-way adjustable driver seat, rear-window defroster and a 60/40 split-bench rear seat. The five-door offers the only rear seat in the segment that folds flat and flips forward, for a segment-leading 42 cubic feet (1,189L) of cargo space.

For 2005, Aveo’s powertrain warranty is increased to five years or 60,000 miles, from three years or 36,000 miles. The new extended warranty tops Aveo's 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty, and is called the "Powertrain Promise."

Cavalier: Cavalier enters 2005 with features and options customers would expect on more expensive models: GM’s sophisticated Ecotec 2.2L engine, a sporty suspension, aerodynamic body panels, GM’s OnStar safety and security system, and XM Satellite Radio (continental U.S. only).

Impala: For 2005, Impala comes standard with the latest generation of GM’s OnStar safety and security system. This Gen 6 hardware includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities, including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. Other changes include revisions in exterior badging, new chrome-finish 17-inch  diamond-cut cast aluminum wheels, and use of body side moldings made from ‘nanocomposites,’ a new material that is lighter, more durable with a higher quality finish, and 100-percent recyclable.

Malibu/Malibu Maxx: Malibu offers the room and convenience of a more traditional sedan, while the longer-wheelbase Malibu Maxx extended sedan features an innovative, split-folding rear seat that can be moved about 7 inches (18 cm) fore or aft for either limousine-like rear passenger room or up to 106 cubic feet (3,002L) of cargo space. The rear seat also reclines and can be folded flat, for maximum versatility.

New features for 2005 include a redesigned rear spoiler and rear wiper standard on Malibu Maxx LT; thorax side-impact air bags for front occupants made standard on Malibu LS and Malibu Maxx LS (available on all other models); and a new Sport Appearance Package for the Malibu sedan that includes body-color side moldings and alloy wheels.

Monte Carlo: Monte Carlo enters 2005 with subtle changes to its successful formula. Trim levels are realigned to include the LS, LT and Supercharged SS, each one having a specific V-6 engine. Power ranges from a 3.4L with 180 horsepower (134 kw), up to a supercharged 3.8L that delivers 240 horsepower (179 kw). GM’s OnStar safety and security system is standard for 2005, using Gen 6 hardware with digital and analog coverage, as well as upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities. Also new for 2005 are available 17-inch diamond-cut cast aluminum wheels with a chrome finish.
