puffyrs 04-02-2011, 03:06 PM http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start1.jpg This is my new project. I have been inspired by the likes of Propeller, Scratch Built, Canister and others to do this. I like building old rally cars but wanted to do something different and in a big scale. You can get a Lancia Stratos in 1/12th but I did not want to do one of those. So I started thinking about Tamiyas 1/10th scale 037 remote control car. I won a car body on Japanese EBay with a decal sheet. I will then build everthing that goes inside it. Then started to get info together (see photo) I got books, drawings, a copy of the Homologation Papers and lots of photos. This is one of the great things about the internet, you can find so much info. Anyway my plan is to build a 1/10th scale Lancia 037 with opening rear, drivers door and the front to come off. I will be using plastic, resin, fibre glass and vacuum forming parts to build it, will also be having some photo etched parts made. I enjoyed building lots of scratch parts for my MK2 Escort so I thought why not. If you see me doing something and you have a better way please say as I’m new to this. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start6.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start2.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start3.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start4.jpg I started by filling the holes that should not be there and cutting out the openings in the rear bumper. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start5.jpg I have to cut all the rear panel out next. wish me luck.. Thanks Capri-Schorsch 04-02-2011, 03:34 PM Wow,thats a real big one! I never knew that there is a lancia 037 in 1/10 scale. I think i sit in first row and enjoy your build. Christian quadzero 04-02-2011, 04:13 PM Good luck on this one. Looking forward to your progress. One thing I wonder about these big projects is what will you do for tires. Are you going to scratch build those also? endac 04-02-2011, 05:09 PM Wow, you really dont realise how big these are untill they're side by side with the 1:24. Definately one of my favourite rallying images is an 037 taking off from a jump with flame spitting from the exhaust. Looking forward to seeing how these goes. cinqster 04-02-2011, 05:29 PM The beast cometh!!! Cyanoed to the seat with popcorn at the ready. :smokin: lovegt40 04-02-2011, 07:03 PM wow, will love to see the work in progress of this mighty lancia ! gasdriverca 04-02-2011, 08:03 PM It's certainly a monster!!! can't wait to see this build. puffyrs 04-03-2011, 04:34 AM Good luck on this one. Looking forward to your progress. One thing I wonder about these big projects is what will you do for tires. Are you going to scratch build those also? Hi I have the wheels and tyres that go with the car. I will be looking into making the back ones bigger in the build. Martin nipponts 04-03-2011, 05:03 AM Very amazing project I buy the Celica gr 5 tamiya body in 1/12 with the same future project :) ScratchBuilt 04-03-2011, 01:03 PM Excellent! Go for it - I don't think there'll be a lack of encouragement from anyone following your progress. Sounds like you've got some good reference material too, which is half the battle. This is what I like about scratchbuilding - you're not limited to the 'normal' scales or the 'normal' kits - just get on and build it. Of course, having a bodyshell like this is a big plus point - but I'm assuming you'll find lots of details that need changing and correcting, right? One of these days I'll have to build something with a roof, too... All the best! SB puffyrs 04-05-2011, 04:24 AM Quick update. Rear panel and vents in bumper cut out just got to clean them up. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start7.jpg This plastic was so thick. Next the drivers door and engine cover at the rear to come off, fingers crossed. mugenhb 04-05-2011, 09:44 PM this project is awesome, I love big scale stuff, and this is inspiration to start on my 1/12 Mazda rx7. can't wait to see more progress. Steve rollin80s 04-06-2011, 05:53 PM ooof, another big scale build to keep a track of. lols looking forward to this madness that is going around. puffyrs 04-10-2011, 03:49 PM No turning back now. I would like to cut the front off as well but have to build some support in first. Now I will start to build the floor and door opening. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037start8.jpg gtziaf 04-11-2011, 01:43 PM Great Project and great start. I follow it closely. Good luck until the end... Boreham 04-16-2011, 04:14 AM amazing looking shell..size ..once seen alomgside the 1/24 scale Hasagawa item. looking forward to the build up/WIP . this is a huge task... goodluck.. puffyrs 04-18-2011, 01:34 PM Been working on the door. So when I have the shape I can then build up the floor sills and door opening. Still lots to do. First made frame at bottom http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door1.jpg Then made up infill and filled moulding which I think must have held remote control equipment. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door2.jpg Bit more filler and built up around the window frame. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door3.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door4.jpg Will carry on tonight. puffyrs 04-21-2011, 01:04 PM Door frame all most completed. Just the window frame and the kevlar door card to go. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door5.jpg I'm pleased how it is going. puffyrs 05-02-2011, 05:02 AM Still been working on the door. ( i'm getting there. ) http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door6.jpg How it should look. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door8.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/door7.jpg Also started on the floor, this is the underside. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor1.jpg Now to start on the top many different layers. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor2.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor3.jpg Still :)ing. endac 05-02-2011, 06:06 AM Great work so far, the door looks really good puffyrs 05-14-2011, 05:11 AM Still been working on the floor. I'm building some parts in wood as i'm going to have it vacuum formed. I will be building a vacuum forming table but I do not want to hold up the build so i'm sending it off for someone to do. I have to take most of the details from the 1/24th model amd photos I have. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor4.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor5.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor6.jpg rallymaster 05-14-2011, 06:27 AM All this work needed... Wow !! :naughty: For sure it will bring a great result and make its effect, but sincerely I think I myself wouldn't try such a big scale model with so many corrections or scratch to do... :screwy: You've a lot of courage !! :iceslolan puffyrs 06-16-2011, 03:13 PM Been waiting 3 weeks for this to be vacuum formed by someone on Ebay. :banghead: They took my master. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor5.jpg And got this back http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor7.jpg But now I have it I'm pleased. I can now carry on with the build. puffyrs 07-01-2011, 08:49 AM Been working on the back panel. Still lots to do. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor8.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor9.jpg Still having fun rollin80s 07-05-2011, 03:29 PM this is awesome. the vacuumed part looks great too. keep up the great work. puffyrs 07-09-2011, 10:15 AM Still working on the back panel and started on the rear frame. Added a brass rod for strength in the frame. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor10.jpg still lots to do, but up to here so far. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/floor11.jpg puffyrs 07-27-2011, 02:32 PM Still working on the frame. Lots of work will have to go into this. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame1.jpg Also made some weld marks, pleased how they came out. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame2.jpg Made a frame up to help with the other tubes. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame3.jpg Have to make sure all is ok before I glue it. DerXL 08-01-2011, 01:08 AM This is looking very impressive. I need to save this thread somewhere for future reference, as I've got an 037 in my stash too. And this is (in my opinion) a reference build! Could you please explain how you made the weld seams? They look the business! puffyrs 08-03-2011, 03:04 PM This is looking very impressive. They look the business! Hello I will do some photos on how I did weld lines soon. Very easy but remember this is on a 1/10th scale so may not work on all scales. Martin MarcoSaupe 08-06-2011, 03:44 PM Oh that's great, I can't wait to see it with full Martini livery on it :) Slash01 08-09-2011, 02:54 AM I have been watching this build for a couple of months now and I have to say outstanding, the detail you are including is awesome.:iceslolan I would like to know where you got hold of the Homologation papers, as I wouldn't mind getting hold of a copy for a group B project I have. puffyrs 09-07-2011, 12:05 PM Hello Been on my holidays so now back to modelling. Still working on the rear frame. I still have about 12 tubes to add. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame4.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame5.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame6.jpg lots to do. puffyrs 09-18-2011, 01:34 PM Lots more tubes added a few to go. Starting to add the suspension points now. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame7.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame8.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame9.jpg still lots to do. This is the first time I have done any thing like this, but having fun. :) ScratchBuilt 09-18-2011, 02:21 PM Keep going - it's looking really good! The moulded floor looks right at home, too. I always find it really satisfying when the tubes start coming together like that - everything starts to grow! I assume there'll be a similar subframe at the front, too? All the best, SB puffyrs 09-19-2011, 11:57 AM Keep going - it's looking really good! The moulded floor looks right at home, too. All the best, SB Hello I'm glad you like it , you were one of the reasons I started this. The front will be the same. Will be a while yet. GTmike400 09-20-2011, 05:59 PM Very impressive work, Martin. I saw your post in the machining subforum about a few parts. Send me a PM with some pictures of what you need. Cheers. puffyrs 09-22-2011, 03:40 PM Very impressive work, Martin. Martin Scalemodelfanatic 09-22-2011, 06:35 PM Looking great, this one will be a stunner when finished. puffyrs 10-03-2011, 02:14 PM Still working on the frame. Been working on the bottom suspension points. This was hard work. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame10.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame11.jpg Still lots to do. spamsac 10-03-2011, 09:18 PM I love this build. Great to see such a great car getting this kind of treatment. How accurate is the shell to begin with? Tamiya make great RC shells, but also they have to fit generic chassis designs. The work you're doing looks great though, from the tubing to the floor pan. Looking forward to watching it going forward. Regards, Simon puffyrs 10-04-2011, 12:46 PM I love this build. I only could measure it up against the 1/24th scale model as I throught that would be more accurate. It is only mm's out. I'm just having fun and working on my skills as this is all new to me. As long as it looks like a 037 that's good for me. icon_modeler 10-04-2011, 07:36 PM I'm just having fun and working on my skills as this is all new to me. It certainly does that. A very nice one to boot! :) gionc 10-05-2011, 02:52 PM The shell is not to bad. BTW: Hase 1/24 body shell isn't 100% accurate: have a look to Ken's Rally builds to have one idea of the stuff: it is mainly in the front hood area. cinqster 10-05-2011, 05:20 PM Hi Mike Thanks for the offer of help. I have someone that is helping me at the moment. Will post pictures when I have them. Thanks again. Martin The model's looking great Martin! You know this is the perfect project excuse to buy yourself a very nice mini lathe!!!?:smooch: puffyrs 10-06-2011, 02:21 PM The model's looking great Martin! You know this is the perfect project excuse to buy yourself a very nice mini lathe!!!?:smooch: I will at some point get one. But only ever used one at school, so I only have time to build at the moment not learn how to use a lathe. I would love to have a good though. puffyrs 10-15-2011, 08:22 AM Still working on the upper suspension fixings. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/037new0809.jpg Had to make 8 of these http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame12.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame13.jpg Fitted http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/frame14.jpg Also been making my vacuum box. Too late for a heads up, but Maplins used to do pre-drilled circuit board that may have negated drilling all those holes! puffyrs 10-31-2011, 01:57 PM Hello So I could work out where the rear suspension goes I started work on the gearbox. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/gearbox1.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/gearbox2.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/puffyrs/gearbox3.jpg Still lots to do. This is the same as the GT40, so lots of info available.
